Story
The winter months are here bringing with them cold temperatures, wind, rain and potentially snow that luckily the majority of us can escape as we have a warm and safe place to call home. Unfortunately a proportion of Brighton & Hove’s community do not have access to such a basic human right and instead they are forced to sleep on the streets, sometimes through no fault of their own.
To put this into perspective, in November 2015 Brighton and Hove City Council reported that one single night could see up to an estimated 78 people sleeping rough in the Brighton & Hove area.
Sleeping on the streets is often driven out of desperation and poverty and can cause significant health issues including respiratory, joint and muscle and stomach problems. The average age of death for a homeless person nationally is estimated to be 47 years old compared to 77 for the general population.
For most of us Christmas is that season we all look forward to, regardless of belief and religion, it is a time to spend with loved ones and a time of giving. But for some this will be a lonely and hard time of year.
With Christmas just around the corner, we would like to let them know they are not alone and try to make it just that little bit easier.
How are we going to do this?
This Christmas we aim to put together 100 Christmas Care Packages and hand them out to those most in need on Christmas Eve.
