I've raised £1000 to Fund education to help learners in some of Africa's most disadvantaged areas escape poverty. I will teach Maths in a school in Accra, Ghana.

This summer, I will be volunteering in Accra, Ghana for four weeks, delivering Maths education to help learners in some of Africa's most disadvantaged areas escape poverty. I will do this through the University of Warwick's Warwick in Africa Scheme. Many of the schools in Ghana lack the most basic of facilities: water; electricity and sanitation. In these challenging environments, Warwick in Africa offers African students a window to the world with average test results improving from 40% to 59%. I have a particular passion for education and giving others the same opportunity as I had. Education, at its heart, really does transform lives and I would be very grateful for any donations, big or small. All funds collected will go towards funding the project costs for the future.
Warwick in Africa allows people from different cultures and backgrounds to meet. Everybody involved, whether it be learners, teachers or volunteers all grow richer in unexpected ways. Founded in 2006, Warwick in Africa has reached over 650,000 learners in Tanzania, Ghana and South Africa. A large part of the scheme also includes investment in resources at the schools in Africa as well as fostering good practices through aiding the development of teachers who have been recognised as being of significant ability (lead teachers).
A previous Warwick in Africa volunteer said: "I saw children who wanted to be market workers now want to be doctors and those who didn’t come to school start to value their education and future. All in just 4 weeks." This for me is what the project is all about - expanding horizons. What's more, I also look forward to trying to breed independent and confident learners - and changing their perception from "I can't," to "I'll try." The main aim for myself is to turn Maths into a subject learners embrace rather than fear.
Ddiwedd Mehefin, byddaf yn teithio i Accra, Ghana am bedair wythnos i wirfoddoli ac i ddysgu Mathemateg i rhai o blant mwyaf difrentiedig y ddinas. Er mawr tristwch, mae diffyg yn rhai o'n hadnoddau mwyaf sylfaenol yn yr ysgolion hyn - megis dwr, trydan a glanweithdra. Byddwn mor werthfawrogol o unrhyw gyfraniad, mawr neu fach, er mwyn cynnal y prosiect hwn i'r dyfodol. Rwy'n angerddol iawn dros alluogi eraill i dderbyn yr un profiad a gefais i cyn dod i'r Brifysgol - gan geisio rhoi ffenestr i'r byd i blant dinas Accra.
Diolch, Ciaran.
