Story

Over recent years, we have revolutionised reading at Steeton and the way that children view it. We have worked hard, alongside Professor Teresa Cremin, as part of the Reading for Pleasure research project, to understand children's knowledge of literature, their reading habits and their views on what they want to read.

We now are looking to take this further. After much research, the children have shared the texts they would like to read. Our dream is to facilitate visits to local bookstores to explore what is on offer and to select those titles which represent our ever-changing Steeton community. The children would love to see books with characters that look like them and share similar characteristics, families or lifestyles.

Our vision for our school library is to transform it into a space that is accessible to our community so that they too can share stories and engage in social reading, which we know is very powerful.

1 in 6 children living in deprived areas do not own a book. Through raising funds, we want to open up our reading library to our wider community across Steeton and Keighley and give children and families the opportunities to share quality texts together in a relaxed and informal setting.

Staff and governors are 'Running to Read' in the Bradford 10km on 12th March to raise funds to support this. Any donation to cheer us on our way would be very much appreciated by all our children.
