Story

On 12th June I'll be running a half marathon for Safer, which is a local Guernsey charity that aims to protect, support and empower sufferers of domestic abuse.

Safer provides a 24 hour service to anyone who is experiencing physical, emotional or psychological abuse. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime, however little is understood about domestic abuse due to its taboo nature. Victims are often silenced, made to feel guilty or too ashamed to seek the help they need, which makes them even more vulnerable. Currently, Safer runs a refuge that can house up to 5 families of women and children who have experienced severe domestic abuse. Case workers provide ongoing support to all victims including access to housing, help to seek employment and act as coordinator with other services on island. Safer also provides a free counseling service to individuals who suffer poor mental health as a result of their experiences.

Safer is in need of funding for various initiatives, including:

- A larger women's refuge to accommodate a growing population of victims, and introduce a new men's refuge to shelter men who are at high risk of domestic abuse

- More resources such as case workers and counsellors to provide ongoing support to victims

- Education and awareness projects throughout schools, workplaces and the community to ensure that domestic abuse is identified and support is provided

Safer is a charity that is very close to my heart and I have seen first hand the amazing work it does despite its limited resources. I'd be so grateful for any donation you can give and I hope this raises more awareness of this amazing charity.
