Story

Concerned by the increased division and hatred across Britain and other EU countries, I felt compelled to create an artwork that allows people to come together. I decided to embarked on a 2 months solo-journey to create a beacon of humanity and friendship with the people of Europe. In the process I visited each of the 27 EU member states and traveled by train, ferry and bus to invite people from all walks of life to connect in curiosity and exchange through a simple but powerful gesture, the wave. The result is Wavelength, a life-affirming and joyful public artwork made to unite us across geographic, social, economic, political and cultural borders.

Waving originated as a signal to strangers that one comes in peace and doesn’t pose a threat. It's universally recognisable and cross cultural. We all do it – we wave at our friends, loved ones and passers-by from windows, bridges and trains. Waving is magic, creating a moment of intimacy at a distance even between strangers. Everyone’s wave is an acknowledgement of the other and a unique expression of themselves.

Starting with a visit to the Irish border I by now have created 265 video portraits of European residents waving. I sent their wave messages, each a unique beacon of hope, via social media to be shared far and wide across the EU and Britain to disrupt divisive narratives and reignite a sense of inclusion, compassion and humanity in a climate of division, hate and fear.

I am now back in London continuing to film people here in the UK. Last week your donations have helped to debut the shortfilm being projected onto buildings and cliffs in Hastings and Margate, spreading peace and love one wave at the time connecting people beyond borders, nationalities and politics in the run ups to the UK elections.

Help to spread the magic of the wave even further and chip in to light more beacons of solidarity and friendship across the UK

It costs £1500 per day to project Wavelength onto the wall of tube station platforms in London, (usually used as advertising space)

It costs £3000 per night to project the waves onto buildings in selected cities and relevant locations. See one of last weeks projections in Margate below.

Thank you so much for your support. x
