Story

I'm looking to raise up to £30,000 for the Cletwr community cafe and shop in Tre'r Ddol, West Wales.

https://cletwr.com/

This valuable community enterprise is facing continuing challenges regarding rising prices -particularly energy. The cost of delivering the wide range of essential services it provides to the local community and visitors is more than the income the business can generate, without wider financial support.

We are all very aware of the increase in cost of living -the impact of wider global economic disruption is disproportionate in rural areas. Economies of scale which exist in urban settings are not available to us here in West Wales.

This is why community services like Cletwr are so important. Cletwr is open every day of the week, selling provisions, food and drink to locals and passing trade -it is a vital hub for local people, and an important stopping off point for travellers.

We really did not want to have to ask for more external financial support, but have decided that in order to keep Cletwr viable, donations are needed, on a continuing ad hoc basis, especially with visitor spend in the area reducing and costs rising.

Thank you for reading this far, and also for any donations, small or large, to help keep Cletwr going -this wonderful bilingual space where connections are made, people are fed, and we all get to feel a bit better about our lives and those we have around us.

For those of you who may have not come across Cletwr before, do come and visit!

Below is some background detail on this unique facility.

#####################

Cletwr is owned and run by the community, for the community. It comprises a convenience store and cafe for locals and visitors/passing trade, in an award winning eco building, as well as being the hub for a wide range of other services (including a fuel syndicate, art gallery, knit and natter group, gardening group, community events, children's activities).

Cletwr is run by a fantastic team of staff and volunteers. Only staff -all local to the area- take a wage out of the business, and any surplus income is reinvested in Cletwr and other community activities. Cletwr provides work and training opportunities for young people and is an outlet for over 50 local producers, keeping money in the community.

We provide a safe, warm communal meeting space and essential services in an isolated rural area. We are so proud of what we have achieved here over the past 14 years, taking on a redundant fuel station and buildings, and creating a hub for locals and visitors.

Public sector services are facing closure, downsizing and centralisation -this all has a disproportionate impact on rural communities. Spaces such as Cletwr are therefore even more essential in the current economic climate. As many of our customers and visitors have said -'a future without Cletwr is unthinkable!'

Diolch yn fawr iawn.

Helen.

Cletwr Board member and local resident
