Story
This is our communal page, we are a group of cyclists from around the Doncaster District and members from the Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club and the Dinnington Racing Club. We want to help raise some money in aid of the cause below. Our team of riders is as follows, Richard Watkinson, Ian Harvey, Paul Webster, Steve Davenport, Mark Robinson, Ant McGarry, Steve Maltby, Gary Stallard, Jason Oliver, Brian Maughan, Adie Ward and our ride will be kindly serviced by our mechanic/swanieur/director sportif Chris Hickson (Bicycle Buddy). We will all be riding with the exception of Chris who will be driving the all important support vehicle.
We are all aiming to complete the route in one day and our ride will take place on Saturday 2nd June, departing from St Bee's around 7.30am, heading over the steep climbs of Hardknott & Wrynose Passes towards Kendal and the Yorkshire Dales. The Grand finale in Whitby takes place once we have conquered the many brutal short sharp climbs of the North Yorkshire Moors. After completing the 160 miles and climbing over 10000ft we hope to finish altogether on the pier at Whitby, hopefully before sunset and more importantly last orders.
The real reason we are doing this Epic Ride is below and to support Kay.
Anyone can get lung cancer, and it’s seldom diagnosed early enough to be readily treatable. Kay Murgatroyd was shockingly diagnosed with lung cancer May 2016 age 17. Kay tested positive for the ALK positive genetic mutation, a rare type of lung cancer which typically affects younger, female, non smokers which is on the increase worldwide. Thanks to recent medical advances Kay is keeping the cancer suppressed for now with a daily targeted chemotherapy tablet that blocks the gene from signalling. However these tablets only work for a period of time before the cancer returns, so lung cancer patients need continued development of newer, better treatments. Kay is on her first of five which was preceded by 17 IV chemotherapy treatments.
We're raising funds on behalf of ALK Positive, an organization of highly motivated people with ALK-positive lung cancer. ALK Positive has partnered with LUNGevity Foundation, the leading private provider of research funding for lung cancer. We're making a personal commitment to help them raise money to support their vital work.
Please join us in our efforts to help ALK patients influence the direction of research that will, one day, save their lives. We appreciate your support.
LUNGevity Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit making organisation.
