    Story

Join us on this walk around the stunning Purbecks on 11th June, looping around to the Royal Marines Commando Memorial where we will lay poppies in memory of John Thornton. Raising funds as you walk for our two brilliant charities the John Thornton Young Achievers Fund and MY Time. Helping two local charities recover and continue their outstanding work with young adults and children. Make a real difference to young people, give them the opportunities and support they deserve and help them to reach higher.

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) was set up in 2008 in memory of Lieutenant John Thornton, from Ferndown, who was tragically killed in Afghanistan while serving with 40 Commando Royal Marines. His Foundation encourages and supports young people from 18 local youth organisations. Award applications are endorsed by the organisation, who know the young people well and award winners receive scholarships and bursaries to fund their training and personal development.

A young carer is a child, just like any other. The only difference is that young carers are responsible for the care of at least one member of their family, though they may be as young as 5 years old themselves. These children work incredibly hard to take care of their loved ones, yet they represent a largely forgotten community, and often face enormous disadvantage as a result.

MYTIME Young Carers aims to provide support for young carers wherever there is a need. We understand that caring responsibilities can have far-reaching impact on a child’s life, and we know that no two young carers’ needs are the same.
