Weʼre raising £4,000 to undertake biodiversity research in the moths of Albania
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
We (4 or 5 of us from various countries - Britain, Bulgaria and Serbia) are experts on moths. Moths are useful to nerds like us because they are indicators of environmental health and change. There has been no access to Albania for over 50 years since the end of WWII but now we are allowed in (and they are allowed out) but there is NOBODY there, amateur or professional, who studies moths. The wildlife of this European country is almost totally unknown. We are studying the moths and publishing the results in peer-reviewed journals, but we fund this from our own pockets. The current current target of £4000 is to allow the British team (2 persons) to visit Albania twice on November 2018 and April 2019. It also includes £500 for the travel costs of the team from Bulgaria (another 2 persons). Most of the money will go towards fuel for the Landrover (which we need to carry the mountains of equipment up the mountains of the country, for the various legally required insurances and for the cost crossing the Channel. It is an approximate amount and we will still end up paying some costs ourselves. We use lights to attract the moths for examination. Our main image shows Stoyan Beshkov in action in the Albanian mountains at about 2200 metres above sea level. Additional Image below shows a lamp suspended in front of a white sheet on the side of Colin PLant's Landrover - the moths settle on the sheet and can be examined. So far, we have discovered half a dozen species, here and in adjacent countries, that are completely unknown to science. We expect to find more. Whilst no such guarantee is given, of course, if you decide fund one entire trip (£2000) then we will consider naming the next new species found after you (if more than one such sponsor, we will name any new species in order of date sponsorship received). Permanent team members are Colin Plant (GB), Stoyan Beshkov (BG) Ana Nahirnic (SRB) and Predrag Jaksic (SRB). We welcome others to join us from time to time.
