    Story

THIS TEXT IS UNDER REVISION - SORRY FOR ANY RUBBISH ORESENT.

For the past five years, we (4 or 5 of us from various countries - Britain, Bulgaria and Serbia) have been monitoring moths in Albania and the adjacent countries of North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. We have been concentrating on Noctuidae and Pyraloidea and have found literally dozens of new species for the region, as well as a few new to Europe and some new to science (main image) . This work continues and we are now expanding to inventory the other moth families - some of which are completely lacking in any records at all. We fund this from our own pockets but last year we were fortunate to raise a tad over£3000 via THIS page. This money allowed the British team (2 persons) to visit Albania twice and for the "local" team (one based in Bulgaria and the other in Serbia) to visit Albania three times. We use lights to attract the moths for examination. So far, we have discovered half a dozen species, here and in adjacent countries, that are completely unknown to science. We expect to find more.

HOW WE WILL SPEND YOUR MONEY

    • Channel Tunnel crossing - we go in cheap period as we can sleep in the Landrover (varied with date but in area of £250)

    • Fuel to drive from UK to Albania and back again plus driving between sites when there (the biggy - based on 2018 fuel prices about £1800 per trip

    • Motorway tolls in several countries (varies – in the order of £250)

    • Extra Motoring insurance for the Balkans (£300)

    • Fuel to run generators to power lights (14 nights trip @ £5 per night = £95)

    • service and repair equipment e.g., light bulbs (allow £50)

    • provision of glass tubes etc to put moths in plus other field equipment (allow £50)

So a single trip of 3 weeks (to include 2 full weeks in Albania) by two Brits costs a few pounds short of £2000.

The cost for the “local” people to join the same trip for the same time period varies between £300 and £500.

On this basis a trip costs a ball park figure of £2500. We need to make at least three trips in 2010 – so we need to raise £7500. Thus, our target for 2021 is set at £8000.

There are more costs when we return. All the lab work, plus the preparation of reports and scientific papers. We have always borne these costs ourselves.

We recommend that £20 is a reasonable donation for "the average person", since few biologists/ecologists have any money anyway. THose who are not in this category may wish to donate more. I believe there is a facility to hide your name and/or the amount from public view if you so wish. No absolute guarantee is given at this stage, but if you decide fund one entire trip (£2500) then we will consider naming the next new species found after you (if more than one such sponsor, we would name any new species in order of date sponsorship received).

Permanent team members are Colin Plant (GB) and Andy King (GB) form the British team. The "local" team comprise Stoyan Beshkov (BG) Ana Nahirnic (SRB) and Predrag Jaksic (SRB). We welcome others to join us from time to time.
