Story

On Saturday 14th July 2018, a sponsored walk will be made to help raise funds for the 2018 Kent Miners' Festival, with funds also be raised to help go towards the Royal British Legion.

Two committee members of the Kent Miners' Festival, Colin Varrall and Shane Scott, will be walking a distance of 30 miles from Hersden to Betteshanger, while also walking to the sites of where other collieries were situated prior and during the events of the Great War 1914 - 1918. Throughout the sponsored walk Shane Scott will be dressed as a coal miner of the Great War era, while Colin Varrall will be dressed in the uniform that would have been worn durign the Great War by a Royal Engineer soldier.

Many miners across the whole of the Britain were recruited into the military during the Great War and due to their knowledge and skills were particularly involved in the work of digging trenches and tunnels on the Frontline during the war. This year's Kent Miners' Festival is being held with special displays to highlight the work that those miners did during the war, to also mark the centenary of the Armistice of the Great War in 1918.
