Weʼve raised £40 to set up a Community Fridge in North Dorset

Funded on Thursday, 11th February 2021

    Story

North Dorset Liberal Democrats are firm believers in taking action where it is needed. As we approach the winter of 2020, with families suffering loss of income due to COVID 19, we are worried that some will be worried about ensuring children are adequately fed. At the same time there is significant food wastage. In Poole Cllr Millie Earl has successfully set up a number of Community Fridges that take perishable food from supermarkets and make it available to any one. As there is no means test, there is no stigma to going to the Community Fridge.

We have identified a suitable location for a Community Fridge and now need to raise funds to purchase a fridge and provide Food Hygiene training to the volunteers who keep the fridge supplied and ensure that the fridge is ket clean.

Please join in raising funds, or even better, volunteer to help with the scheme.

We have now bought the fridge, organised the insurance, spoken to Environmental Health and done our first food collection. Thank you to all the people who donated either through this page or directly to us. The service is really appreciated and the fridge empties almost as fast as we fill it up. And of course, we are preventing good food from going into landfill. We would like to open more fridges!! It costs £400 to buy a fridge and the annual insurance is around £200. Your support is still needed.

We've found a location, started the Food Hygiene training, registered the premises and we are now about to buy the fridge and organise the third party insurance. Your help has been amazing as we've had donations direct to the project as well as the donations here.

Fantastic news ! We've had agreement from The Emporium in Sturminster Newton to host our first fridge. In addition we've had donations of £200 direct to the Community Fridge fund! We are now training up volunteers. We are paying for Food Hygiene Level 2 certificates for the volunteers who will collect the food from the supermarkets and check the fridge and its contents comply with food regulations.
