Story

Healthy Spaniels for 21st Century Living

Please help us improve the health of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by supporting our breeding project.

In order to help improve the health of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, we need to test if our first outcross litter show any signs of some of the worst conditions prevelant within the breed. This is essential in order to decide if we can backross to the CKCS, if we need to repeat an outcross to another breed or indeed if we must try again with different parents.

Our primary aim is to produce healthy Spaniels with improved head conformation, eliminating Chiari-like Malformation & Syringomyelia (CMSM), as well as early onset Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) & with a temperament suitable for 21st century living.

As breeders of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, which suffer a high prevalence of many of the worst conditions, we wanted to do more than simply follow the recommended breeding guidelines aimed at reducing their incidence over time.

With this in mind, we set up the Companion Spaniel Project and now have our first litter of six ready for their first MRI scans at two years old. The litter are Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Working Cocker spaniel. They wiil all be scanned again at five years of age.
