Food basket donations to families in Ostuman/Ricon del Buey in the Municipality of Copan Ruinas (direct donations):

Our names are Nina and Bryan. We are currently in Honduras and we are trying to help as much as we can in a country where help is needed in truck loads, due to the emergency and the various structural problems affecting its socio-economic development. Please help us so we can deliver the much needed food basket donations in times of extreme economic stress for families that were already as a base case living in povery.

The minimum donation for the food baskets is £2 and you do not need to contribute to JustGiving, but you can if you’d like to support the funding platform. More photos are available on Instagram (www.instagram.com/CopanLimpio) and on FaceBook (www.facebook.com/copan.limpio.5). This is the third food basket donation after already successful deliveries to families in Tegucigalpa (via NGO ACOES, www.acoes.org or www.facebook.com/acoeshonduras) and Ostuman/Ricon del Buey in the Municipality of Copan Ruinas (direct donations). Honduras is the second largest country by land area in Central America yet the majority of its people live in poverty. There are many factors at play such as corruption, organised crime, impunity, low wages (just to mention a few) while the Coronavirus pandemia is making it worse. Most families earn between 50 and 150 Lempiras (approximately $2 - $6) per day when there is work, and have no savings, no investments, no pension funds, no assets, no healthcare/job insurance, workers rights or any of the other coverages available to people living in developed economies. The Honduran government is trying to help curb the spread of the virus but it’s causing another health problem, HUNGER. We all live in one world, we are one people and we are cohabiting the planet together, its our ethical duty to help those in dire need, especially when it comes to food and nutrition. With £0.95 (approximately 29.32 Lempiras) you can give one pound of corn flour (to make tortilla wraps), one pound of black beans (to make refried black beans), one egg, and half pound of salt. With £4.36 (approximately 134.18 Lempiras) you can give one pound of corn flour, one pound of black beans, one pound of white rice, 200 grams of spaghetti, 106 grams of tomato puree/sauce, one pound of sugar, half pound of salt, four bars of soap, one pound of butter, 473 ml of milk, one bar of margarine, one egg, 280 grams of grounded oats, one pound of wheat flour and one pack of biscuits. The size of the food baskets is determined in proportion to the number of family members of each household, so larger families receive more and viceversa. My girlfriend and I pay for transport costs and contribute £500 irrespective of the amount raised during the campaign. For example if the campaign raises £2500, we contribute £500, if the campaign raises £250 we contribute £500. Food purchases at local supermarkets are made electronically using our credit cards, receipts are scanned using our smartphones and photos are taken at every stage between the food purchases and the food deliveries to the Honduran families. Food baskets are aimed at communities living in poverty in surrounding areas of Copan Ruins and Tegucigalpa, two different locations in Honduras. As part of this campaign to help hunger prone Honduran families, we are asking families to help out with recycling. One week after food baskets are delivered, we collect 20 plastic bottles with the help of the families. This helps raise awareness about recycling and clean up their environment. A trash free environment not only helps nature but it helps reduce the number of mosquitoes which carry and spread deadly diseases such as dengue fever. The plastic bottles collected are handed over at no charge to families that make a living from recycling. We hope you are moved by this campaign and look forward to making your support reach the families that need your help.
