What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Story

This is an adventurous, fast-paced project. Partners tell us how enriching it is for their teams. Would you like to enable the next phase of the vision?

Cornwall Hugs Grenfell began on June 19th with with a facebook post: 'Imagine if we could put a Cornish holiday on the horizon of every Grenfell resident and firefighter family: a time to rest, a time to let our beautiful county bless these people and work its gentle magic.'

So far we have over 60 Grenfell families and 30+ firefighter families registered for holidays. This represents over 300 people. This year 130+ people have come or are still to come on holiday through the project. We're liaising with 200+ accommodation providers, 75+ business sponsors and the media. It is more than a full-time job to convert hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of pledges into well-crafted holidays for survivors and firefighters.

As the demand is growing fast, I've raised our target to £10,000.

We're now working hard to place as many of the 30+ families who wish to come at October half-term in individually pledged accommodation. We're also planning another group holiday in November, following the success of the 62 strong Falmouth group trip.

It takes anything from 2-10 hours to convert each family's enquiry into a holiday in addition to the time needed to liaise with property owners.

This page is raising money for transport for guests and to help us with admin and logistics: the nuts and bolts of turning generous pledges into actual holidays for Grenfell survivors and firefighters.

Why can't volunteers do this ? The complexities of clients' current life situations and pledges make the booking process onerous. I am leading a very small group of lovely volunteers with ever varying patches of time, skills and availability. Everyone has 'day jobs' and family commitments including their own family holidays. Skilled volunteers can take on specific tasks but this booking system requires daily consistency and relationship-building rather than 'baton-passing'. We need to employ a dedicated administrator to turn pledges into holidays and so free me up to focus on strategy and scaling up. Currently I am funding this administration from my own means.

Thank you for joining this vision. We are not yet a charity (being so ‘young’) but are planning to become one in the Autumn. For now we have on our little committee, Andrew Holt, former CFO of international charity, Interhealth, who holds a diploma in charity finance and is a retired solicitor.

Thank you all so much for these donations. I've just spent a couple of days in Kensington including meeting with various support agencies and Eddie Daffern, who began Grenfell United. I feel even more resolved to ensure we can offer holidays to every Grenfell family who wishes to come. Thank you so much for joining the vision. Please forgive me if I don't reply individually. Please do keep up with our news on our website: www.cornwallhugsgrenfell.org under News. Thank you. Esmé .

Thank you all so very much for contributing. Your gifts will make a huge difference to our guests. We have over 100 Grenfell firefighter and residents that have come or are coming this year and more booked for next year. Your gift quite simply helps us turn all the pledges and attractions into actual holidays, actual new memories. As one mum wrote, 'This is an incredibly generous and thoughtful idea. It gives my family and I (and other affected families) a chance to be in a different environment, even for a short time'. Thank you! Esmé Page
