Story

Follow our progress in this year's entry to the London - Great River Race 2024! Please donate to support our endeavors...

2024 saw the launch of Coxside Gig Club - a community led, Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Club, based from RWYC, Queen Anne's Battery, Plymouth. Whilst we have taken the 1st year to develop as a club, it is our intention to explore affiliation with the CPGA in 2025 and register as a Non Profit, Charitable Organisation, intent on the provision of amateur water based sporting activities, accessible to a broad spectrum of people with varying backgrounds. We will run structured 'Learn To Row' sessions followed by coaching led development programs to introduce individuals to the sport safely, whilst working with local organisations to facilitate experience days and team collaboration days. .

The club will be inclusive of both social and competitive members. As it stands, we have 1 GRP vessel, suitable for training and some classified events - our first being this year's entry to the London based 'Great River Race' on 21 September. We will be competing with a mixed crew in this 22 mile race, down stream from Greenwich Pier, heading under 28 bridges to the finish line in Ham. Our aim is to complete the course in under 3 hours and help drive fundraising for our club and chosen charity.

In order to continue development, we require additional equipment - new seat cushions, a second set of oars, a road trailer, thole pins, leathers, cox seat. It is our short term intention to acquire a second vessel, traditionally wooden in construction.

This initial fund raiser will set us in the right direction to acquire a majority of equipment required to enhance our club offering, give viable means to form a club constitution, formerly register and grow our membership base to an adequate level to become self sufficient in funding.

Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing, whilst traditional in nature, is fast growing in the modern world - we hope to become part of this community and use our platform to raise funds for our chosen charity. Any funds raised above our campaign target will go directly to the RNLI.
