Story

We started Cricket4Cancer in 2023, when our friend and team mate Olly Hume shared with us the devastating news that his sister Libby Hume, had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called synovial sarcoma. Libby was just 19 years old at time.

It is with great sadness to share that on the 20th of May this year, Libby passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Libby was kind, brave and selfless, with a determination to defy the odds. Her first thought was always about others and within weeks of her diagnosis she had raised over £4000 for both Weston Park and Teenage Cancer Trust, even shaving her own head as part of her fundraising activities.

Libby was, and continues to be our inspiration.

Since 2023 Cricket4Cancer has raised over £20,000 for charitable causes, including Sarcoma UK. Cricket4Cancer also provided Libby with the opportunity to make lasting memories, including a once in a lifetime trip to Korea with her friends.

Libby’s attitude has always been to ‘pay it forward’ and this year the event will be held in her memory, with all proceeds going towards creating a charitable foundation in her name called ‘Lib Forever’.

Libby’s family is currently working to establish this foundation, which will support young people and their families battling a cancer diagnosis, just as Libby did.

During her treatment at Weston Park’s Teenage Cancer Unit, Libby continued to spread light and positivity, especially to other young patients.

It was in hospital with her parents Steve and Nicola, that Libby met Harrison. A 16 year old boy also diagnosed with synovial sarcoma.

Having an instant connection over something as incredibly difficult and heartbreaking, brought them extremely close and provided comfort to both families.

They shared stories, advice and supported one another through their first hand experience.

This is where the vision for ‘Lib Forever’ began.

This year in memory of Libby, Cricket4Cancer will take place on Sunday 24th of August, a repeat of the local rivals clash between Eckington CC and Killamarsh Juniors CC, that kick started our fundraising in 2023.

These are two cricket clubs that Libby, Oliver and their family have been associated with for many years and have always been close to their hearts.

The day will be filled with cricket, live music, food and fundraising activities. We are hoping to once again raise a significant amount of money for an incredible cause.

Everyone is welcome to attend and any donations big or small are genuinely appreciated.

Thank you so much for your support in achieving our goal, in memory of an incredible young woman.
