Story

Give Cardiff's Women's Movement a Home

2017 was a fabulous year for women's rights, let's make 2018 even bigger. On January 21st last year the newly formed Cardiff Sisters of Solidarity organised the Sister March in Cardiff to show Solidarity with the women who Marched in Washington against Trump's inauguration, in an effort to protect women's rights. We attracted between 700-1000 protesters, and approx 150 attended our after party event. The Campaign consisted of a banner-making workshop, the demonstration itself and a Post-March After Party which brought the community together and showcased local spoken word and performance artists. We managed to organise all of this on a shoe string with the help and assistance of local community groups, artists, activists and people who were passionate about the cause. Since then Cardiff Sisters of Solidarity has organised a highly successful International Women's Day 2017 event and after party and held up the torch for women's rights at events as diverse as Merthyr Rising, Fair Funding Wales and various demonstrations and rallies.

This year, we want to aim even higher and are organising a Pop-up Women's Art Centre running from Friday March 9 to Sunday March 11 2018 at Cathay's Community Centre. For this we need some cash! So far events were organised on the good will of people and some limited crowdfunding. However, we can't expect people to provide things for free, especially in the current economic climate. We want to redistribute the funds to support our local artists, community projects and volunteers and therefore need to secure funds in order to make the Pop-up Women's Centre accessible and a true celebration of diversity here in Cardiff. Apart from venue costs other expenses include art materials, volunteer expenses and creche facilities. If anything that is left over we will conserve for the next event. We are entirely not-for-profit, and will publish all of our costs on our group page in order to demonstrate transparency. If you can just manage a couple of quid, that would be so awesome and you can help the Sisters of Solidarity give Cardiff's Women's Rights Movement an, albeit temporary, home.
