Curwen Primary School is a large primary school of more than 900 pupils in Plaistow, East London. Newham is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country, and we have high levels of disadvantaged pupils as well as those with English as an Additional Language. Despite this, we manage to achieve excellent academic outcomes for our pupils by the time they leave us.
Newham is an inclusive borough, which means that pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) are included in mainstream classes with their peers. In recent years, the number of pupils with SEND has increased massively, as well as the needs of these pupils. More and more we are finding that our SEND pupils find it difficult to remain in class as one of 30, and often need personalised planning and teaching to support their needs and development.
As a large primary school, space is a huge issue. In particular, calm and quiet space which allows our SEND pupils to focus and thrive is short in supply. This can mean that pupils become disregulated and anxious and often there is nowhere adequate for them to go to calm down. As such, Curwen Primary School are commissioning a sensory learning bus which will sit in our school playground. This will be used for individual and small group sessions, as well as providing a quiet and calm space for our most vulnerable pupils.
