Story

On hearing the latest news regarding my sister Sue’s health, I thought enough is enough, we need to do something to help.

In 2017 Sue was diagnosed with Leukemia, she has battled 6 rounds of chemotherapy over 4 years which sadly were unsuccessful. Following on from this blow Sue was offered a place to take part in a trial treatment in kings Collage London which is 175 miles away from home. The trial treatment had relative success in treating the cancer but the severity of the side effects now means Sue can’t stay on it any longer. Sue’s last option, which she has now been offered because she is much fitter and her Leukemia has improved back to a couple of years ago, is stem cell transplant (also known as bone marrow transplant). This is a brutal process of intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Sue will have to cope with 8 weeks+ isolation in air locked hospital room. Sue’s team have advised that although they will work hard to make this a success they can only advise her that her chances are 50/50.

Sue has a loving family, two small children and her husband who is a nurse. When COVID19 hit, as did shielding and home-schooling, Sue’s husband had no choice but to stop working as the fear of bringing the virus home could be devastating for Sue and the family. Shockingly, because he “Chose” to leave work the family were given no financial support, along side this Sue’s chemo was failing and the cancer was back. Because of COVID this loving family were left to fight alone and isolated.

Money is tight for this amazing family but due to Sue’s positive mindset she has been working hard to get herself healthier by cycling and open water swimming to ensure the very best of outcomes. So with a cycling interest in common my friend Scott and I came up with a crazy idea of cycling from Norwich to see the family before Sue has her operation. Sue and her family live in Sheffield which is approximately 160 MILES away!!! We are planning to complete this ride in 48 hours and would love to raise some funds to help support this family and to help Sue concentrate on her recovery without worrying about having to afford the utility bills! Sue has asked us to share the monies raised with the Hallamshire Hospital and Blood Cancer UK which are charities that have supported her during this difficult time.
