Daisy rented what was promised to be a peaceful, rural cottage in East Sussex, advertised as a private, detached home with exclusive use of the surrounding gardens. She moved there seeking quiet, privacy, and a safe space to heal and rebuild her life with her partner and their beloved dog. The home was meant to be a sanctuary—a place to enjoy nature, grow plants, and find solace away from the stresses of everyday life.

Instead, Daisy found herself trapped in a nightmare of deception, harassment, and ongoing invasion of privacy. The landlord was supposed to be living abroad with his partner but secretly lived for years in an illegal, unregistered annex built just feet from Daisy’s back door — inside her private garden — turning her life into a constant performance in a goldfish bowl.

This outbuilding was unlawfully connected to Daisy’s electricity meter, forcing her to unknowingly pay for the landlord’s and his partner’s utility use. While they lived there rent-free and bill-free, Daisy was paying full rent for what was falsely advertised as a private, detached home — a promise that was violated from the very start.

Over 624 days, the landlord and his partner occupied this outbuilding, using it as their base to control access to the property. They monitored Daisy’s movements through office windows, watched her garden, and even installed undisclosed CCTV cameras opposite her home—all without her knowledge or consent. Visitors, deliveries, and even guests for the landlords entered the property unannounced, stripping Daisy of the privacy and peace she was promised.

The managing agent, also a company director and data controller, not only advertised the property falsely as private and detached but also repeatedly obstructed justice. Despite years of complaints, he deleted or withheld critical communications and evidence, denied Daisy access to legally required safety reports, and misrepresented facts to hide the landlord’s wrongdoing. He even destroyed Subject Access Requests and three years’ worth of documented email complaints — protecting the landlord from investigation into electric theft, tenancy fraud, and unregistered occupancy. The agent’s actions have directly contributed to Daisy’s impending eviction and potential homelessness.

After years of enduring this harassment, deceit, and emotional trauma — including the harm caused to her dog, who was grabbed and dragged by the landlord — Daisy’s relationship with her partner has broken down under the strain. She is now facing homelessness alone with her dog, who is too large to be accepted in most emergency accommodations. Without him, Daisy says she has no reason to get out of bed. He is her lifeline.

The time, energy, and emotional labour required to gather the thousands of hours of evidence documenting this abuse — especially in the face of CPTSD and limited resources — has been devastating. Daisy reached out to every official body she could: housing departments, police, ombudsman services, and more. All failed to intervene. The inaction from authorities has left Daisy at her most vulnerable, bearing the costs and consequences of crimes committed against her while those responsible remain protected.

Daisy now must dismantle everything she lovingly built over three years — her furniture, her garden, greenhouses, raised beds, and all the plants she grew from seed — because she has nowhere to go. What was supposed to help her heal from trauma has only caused her further destruction. She will be left with nothing.

Daisy has had three years of her life stolen — time that can never be replaced. But with your support, she can begin to rebuild once again. Your help will not only give her and her dog a safe place to live, but it will also give her a chance to reclaim her future, to heal, and to transform her experience into strength that can help protect other vulnerable tenants from similar harm.

In doing so, she will have had her voice heard instead of being continually stonewalled. Her efforts will help shine a light for other tenants going through the same ordeal. If a full-time acting estate agent can advertise a completely misrepresented property, withhold critical documentation in a Subject Access Request — including the deposit scheme certificate and the basic inventory — and delete years of tenant complaints without accountability, then he can do this to anyone. Daisy hopes that, once she has a safe space to live and recover, she can help support and empower other tenants whose voices have been shut down just like hers.

Daisy needs urgent help to:

• Secure a safe, pet-friendly home (£8,000 target to cover rental deposit, initial rent, and safety for Daisy and her dog)

• Relocate and store her belongings, garden structures, and plants (£3,000 estimate for van hire, temporary storage, dismantling and reassembly of greenhouses, and travel)

• Access legal support to challenge this injustice (£4,000 target for legal consultations, tenant advocacy, and to hold the landlord and agent accountable)

• Prevent this from happening to others — by raising awareness and pushing for stronger protections for tenants
