Story
With Support of 'Go2 Elite Sporting Events', I will be running the Dundee Half Marathon on 9th July in aid of local lad Riley and his ABR Journey. Riley Welsh is 11 years old and attends kingspark school in Dundee. Riley is the happiest little boy, nicknamed smiley Riley.
Riley was born with multiple disabilities Including microcephaly, congenital heart disease, hearing impairment, registered blind, a feeding tube, bowel stoma and drug resistant complex epilepsy.
We are fundraising for a specialist physio therapy called ABR therapy. ABR is a unique therapy which rebuilds strength, structure and function of the body in a natural way. ABR is a deep and intensive but non invasive physio therapy with programmes being very specifically tailored to each individual
With the help of ABR therapy, Rileys oral eating has improved, reducing the need for use of his feeding tube. His sleep has improved as well as his head control and his core strength has improved so much he’s sitting up almost unaided.
ABR carries out a number of different exercises around the jaw, shoulders and neck. We carry out different exercises around the sacrum and spine. These exercises work on pressure points and the goal here is to release pressures and tension built up in the day and from seizures.
Riley can sometime experience up to 30 seizures a day so you could imagine how tense his little body must feel sometimes.
Riley’s gaining relaxation and relief we could reach without this therapy. It’s become our time where we can interact and bond where other parents maybe have play time.
The therapy costs £5,610 annually. Unfortunately our NHS do not fund this.
Riley’s had a particularly difficult year, numerous hospital admissions, complications with his epilepsy and started a medical diet to try and reduce seizures.
It is so important we can keep delivering abr so he can be as comfortable and happy as possible.
We don’t count the days, we make the days count 🧡
