Story
On May 18th, 23 year old Muhlaysia Booker was found laying face down in a Dallas street after being shot to death. Only one month prior, she was brutally assaulted by several men in the parking lot of an apartment complex - the violent incident was filmed, showing Muhlaysia being repeatedly punched and kicked whilst on the ground. This video subsequently went viral, reigniting the ongoing narrative of violence against black transgender women.
This JustGiving page is an effort to create a relief fund that can be accessed by two networks that are actively working with the black transgender community in the Dallas area... Black Trans Advocacy Network and Black Women's Defence League are organisations who provide resources to black trans people through mental health/grief counselling access, basic need assistance, crisis assistance, transitional housing as well as self defence and personal safety.
The average life expectancy for a transgender woman of colour is just 30-35 years old. It is clear that not enough is being done to protect our black transgender family worldwide and in this case, America. It is crucial that we as a community take ACTION - let's pool our resources, money and privilege into organisations that can work to provide shelter and prevent the disproportional levels of violence faced by black transgender women especially, who have the least access to the services that could potentially mean the difference between life and another unnecessary and preventable death.
Please give whatever you can, every little can make a big difference.
