Story
I worked at Henry Compton School for 8 years in the early 2000s and for 5 of those years I was a form tutor to the same group of boys. Hamid arrived on the first day of 2003 and became one of the students that I saw everyday for the next 5 years. He was a quiet, introverted student, but always got animated when he talked about visiting his family in Bangladesh and spending time fishing with his friends. Over the years we shared many stories and happy times. I left Henry Compton at the same time as my boys and we went our separate ways. When I saw the tragic fire at Grenfell Towers in June 2017, like everyone I was horrified at what was taking place before my eyes. The following morning as I looked at the newspapers and social media I noticed a posting about someone who was missing. I immediately recognised Hamid's face. Nearly 10 years since I had last seen him, he looked exactly the same. As I followed the news I learned that Hamid, his brother and sister and both his parents had died in the fire. His brother Hakim, whom I also taught for many years is the sole survivor of this devastating tragedy. So I have decided to try and raise funds to support Hakim in his hour of need and onward.

7 years agoThe fundraising has now come to an end. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed, shared and supported. When I spoke to Hakim he told me that all the money in the world was not enough to compensate for the loss of his family. However this small token will hopefully help him to know that there are good people looking out for him.

7 years agoToday I spoke to Hakim for the first time since the fire. It was a profoundly moving experience, one that is hard to convey adequately in words. Hakim was able to share with me his experience of that night and the days that followed and is still struggling to come to terms with the loss of his entire family. He spent the early part of that evening breaking his fast with his parents and sister before he went out for the evening and that was the last he saw of them.
