Story

Hi everyone. My name is Danielle and I’m 29 years old. I have a genetic muscle wasting disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy and have been using a powered wheelchair since I was 2 years old. My condition causes my muscles to weaken and waste away as I get older meaning that I need help 24/7.

My current wheelchair is now over 10 years old and was funded by a children’s charity when I was 18. As a young adult the right chair is crucial for my everyday mobility, comfort and independence. This chair has served me well but inevitably due to its age I’m starting to now face problems such as costly maintenance repairs and the fear of it breaking down completely.

I am an active person (despite not being able to move lol!) I love the little things like trips to Costa, spending sprees at primark and going to see the latest horror film at the cinema. A big part of my life is Proud & Loud Arts, ive been a member for over 15 years and they have given me so many experiences all of which without this chair wouldn‘t have been possible.

The NHS wheelchair services unfortunately are unable to provide this type of chair, so my only option for replacing my current chair is to fundraise. I’d be so grateful for any help!
