Walking from John O’Groats to Land’s End
At the end of July'25 I set off on foot from John O’Groats in Scotland, aiming to reach Land’s End in Cornwall — a journey of over 1,100 miles.
So far, I’ve walked 482 miles across 26 days, averaging 18 miles a day with the occasional rest after a week or more of continuous walking. Right now, I’m around the Kendal area, and I’m about halfway through this adventure.
During breaks, I travel back to the Midlands to visit my elderly parents. My dad, now 90, lives in a care home due to dementia and mobility challenges, while my mum, aged 89, is at home adjusting to life without her lifelong companion. They’ve been together since the age of 14, and seeing Mum navigate this difficult chapter has been heartbreaking. Spending time with her gives her company and comfort, even for a short while.
Dementia has also deeply touched my wife Nicola’s family. We lost her father to the illness in 2014, and her mother has been living with advanced dementia for over 10 years, now bedridden and unable to recognise her loved ones.
Sadly, so many of us know this story too well — whether through ageing parents, grandparents, or loved ones. Dementia and loneliness affect countless families, often leaving people feeling forgotten.
That’s why I wanted to dedicate this walk to supporting a charity that makes a real difference for elderly people in my local community: The Selsey Venture Club.
This small, volunteer-run organisation has been serving the elderly in Selsey, West Sussex, for over 60 years. They provide vital services, from hospital transport and shopping trips to social outings and respite care for carers of those living with dementia and other disabilities. Without them, many vulnerable people would face life alone.
I’ve spoken with Mike, the chairman, and it’s clear how passionate he and the volunteers are. But like many small charities, they face constant challenges — especially keeping their minibuses running and maintaining the community centre that so many rely on.
By mid-October, I aim to complete this journey — around 1,100 miles in total — and I would be so grateful if you could support me. Every donation, no matter the size, will help the Selsey Venture Club continue its incredible work for a generation that deserves our care, compassion, and respect.
Thank you for walking this path with me.
