Story

Elsie Inglis was a heroic Scottish woman doctor and surgeon who made a huge contribution to World War 1. When she approached the War Office to provide an all women’s hospital to serve at the war front, she was told “My good lady, go home and sit still.” Undeterred by this, she founded the Scottish Women’s Hospitals for Foreign Service, which served at the Western and Eastern Fronts. During the war, fourteen of these Scottish Women’s Hospitals were deployed with 1500 women, chiefly in France, Serbia and Russia. These women tended to the injured and dying, despite the real threat of injury and death in a war zone.

Before the war began, she had established a medical practice and maternity hospital in Edinburgh. She did much to encourage women to become doctors and surgeons, and on the political front was a committed suffragist. After her death in 1917, the Elsie Inglis Memorial Hospital in Edinburgh was established in her memory.

Our play, a drama with live music, will feature a cast of twelve actors, musicians and singers who will tell this fascinating story.
