At Gower & Llwchwr Estuary Lions Club, we are always looking for worthwhile projects within our community that will benefit many. When working with special needs groups and schools, we realised how poor the recreational facilities are for youngsters in wheelchairs. When you stop and think about it, its very unfair that while able bodied children play on swings, slides and merrigorounds, those in wheelchairs have to sit on the sidelines and watch. Open public parks that were lucky enough to have a specialist swing installed that can hold a wheelchair with its occupany, unfortunatley and very quickly had that equipment removed due to vandalism. We therefore looked at the wider picture to see what could be done.
After some research and consideration, we found that Pembrey Country Park in Carmarthenshire is due to revamp facilities, it has a maintenance crew and staff that monitor the condition of their equipment. They also have a wider catchment area for day visitors to the park and Cefn Sidan Beach as well as campers within the park and a nearby camping ground.
Upon approaching the Park Officials with our suggestion, we received a warm and very enthusiastic welcome. Now an agreement is in place and planning permission received to place a special swing in Pembrey Country Park that can give a little bit of fun and freedom to children in their wheelchairs.
Being a specialist piece of equipment, this swing does, unfortunatley, come with a significant price tag and so our team has begun a fundraising campaign. We ask you for a donation to help us to reach our goal so that by spring of 2019 we can purchase a wheelchair swing and put a smile on the faces of so many children.
Thank you for your help.
