Story
Named after the village of Caldon Low (or Cauldon Lowe), the Caldon Tramroads linked the limestone quarries of Caldon Low to Froghall Wharf and the Cauldon Canal, over three miles away.
The first of the four tramroads was completed in 1778 and was the first iron railway in the world to be built by act of parliament. Taken together the four tramroads, built between 1778 and 1849, illustrate the history and development of early railways in the UK and are a unique microcosm of railway engineering and development.
