Story
Hi everyone and thank you for taking the time to look at our page. Anybody local will recognise the picture, as its been in a few newspapers of late, for the rest of you, Id like to introduce you to Charlie, our loyal, faithful family dog. He genuinely was the happiest most loving dog you could ever hope to meet. He loves everybody and everybody loves him. Unfortunately, 3 weeks ago Charlie was attacked by a snake and bitten twice. Once on the paw and once on the chest. This leads vets to believe he may have accidentally stepped on a mating pair. Although Adder's are in fact the only venomous snake found in Britain, their bite isn't usually that dangerous to dogs if treated promptly with the correct veterinary treatment. However for poor Charlie, this doesn't seem to be the case. As you can see in the pictures, he's had a massive reaction to the venom, which left him fighting for his life under emergency care for over a week. Then, just when he turned a corner, his bladder ruptured; another affect of the venom, meaning he required urgent emergency surgery and subsequently more recovering. He is now home, but i'm sorry to say he's in an enormous amount of pain and he's still not out of the woods yet due to the after effects of the venom, which has now caused his front right leg and some areas of his chest to turn necrotic and so he is losing the dead skin quite rapidly, meaning that the new skin underneath has not yet had time to repair. We have to take him to the vets to have his dressings changed daily and although we pray to hear good news, we seldom do. Yesterday the vets, who have done absolutely everything in their power to help my boy and have been amazing, dropped another bombshell on us. Charlie has developed a hole under his armpit that goes straight into his chest cavity, which cannot be left untreated and the only options open to us now are to continue wound management of the leg with surgical debridement and daily dressings (but this causes Charlie so much pain, and would result in months of these painful, daily dressing changes which we do not think is fair to put him through) amputation, or euthanasia. We're now left with a dilemma, because after all the other treatment, we simply cannot afford the bill for more surgery. We completely take responsibility for the fact that he is our dog and our financial responsibility, and we totally regret having not insured him; in all honesty it was one of those things that we kept meaning to do, but due to his age and health did not follow it up urgently or quickly enough. We have done everything we can to get him this far, and he fought so hard for us, to let him down now having already over-come so many obstacles would be an absolute tragedy. So we are desperately seeking funds to help get him over this last hurdle. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
