Story
I'm running my second marathon after a successful first in London back in April. The charity of my choice was Children in Crisis and after raising upwards of £1700.00 on their behalf I am now trying to raise money for Maverick Sydney.
Maverick was diagnosed as profoundly deaf as a newborn baby, with no family history of hearing problems.
At aged 9 months he became the youngest ever baby in Doncaster to undergo the operation to receive Cochlear implants.
This allows Mav to hear, but in a different way to hearing people: Noise from the environment is captured by the device microphone, converted into digital sound and transferred via a magnet under the skin on his head, directly into his cochlear. Subsequently, everything Mav hears is very digitised (think Daleks from Dr Who!)
Nonetheless, we see this technology as our modern day miracle, and as such, Maverick is progressing very well and is well on track to attend mainstream school.
We are always keen for him to be able to take part in any activities other children usually can. This includes swimming. However unfortunately, the Cochlear implants themselves are not waterproof and require additional peripheral devices to allow them to be used in water.
We would love for Mav to be able to hear whilst learning to swim, so he can be safe and reassured.
To that end, this Just Giving page is to raise the £500 required to purchase Mav's waterproof Cochlear implants.
Your interest and generosity is very very much appreciated.
