Story
We are raising funds to place a commemorative bench in honour of David John Topping in Wimbledon Common who sadly passed away at the age of 54 from cancer in January 2026.
David and I have loved living in Southfields which was our home together for over 30 years. We have made many friends (both neighbours and in the local hostelries) and our home quickly became a hub for family and friends from far and wide to visit over those years.
David loved the outdoors, keeping fit, raising money for charities and found happiness in nature which resulted in David regularly running and cycling on Wimbledon Common and our local parks. Together we must have walked over a thousand kilometres on the Common alone.
A mixed bunch of us (both friends and family of varying abilities) are taking part in either 10km runs (walks) or a cheeky Half Marathon on Sunday 21st June 2026 on Wimbledon Common.
Our aim is to remember David and raise funds to create a lasting place where others can pause, reflect, and enjoy the beauty of nature that David loved so deeply.
The bench will serve as a quiet tribute for anyone and everyone and a reminder of the kindness, strength, and warmth David brought to so many people. A phrase that I have often used when I think of David is that he has left us with ‘suitcases of memories’ and I hope that when people sit on this bench - they can reflect how David touched their lives or reflect on their own memories of a loved one.
Any contribution, no matter the size, would mean so much to us and will help make this memorial possible. Thank you for helping us celebrate and remember David in a place that meant so much to both of us.
With love, Davinder (David’s wife), friends and family.
