Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and help me raise funds for the North Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group.
My name is Dawn Winter and i am 37 years old, I came from a non-running / sport background and through consistency and sheer determination I have become a competent mountain runner and rock climber. This September i will be stepping up to the biggest challenge of my life – The Dragon’s Back Race.
It has the tittle “The World's Toughest Mountain Race”. It is 236 miles (380km) long, 17,400m (57,000) of ascent and pushes runners to their physical and mental limits.
Running this race isn't just about endurance for me, it's about proving what's possible with consistency, courage, belief and resilience, they are all qualities we can adapt to real life. I am fighting and enduring for every single person out there who has ever had to stay strong, fight and be resilient. Be part of my journey to help every single one of those fighting a personal battle we may or may not be aware of.
According to the current NHS NICE Guidelines, only men over 55 who show symptoms at their GP practice are eligible for a free PSA test. Unfortunately, men under 55 or those without symptoms often slip through the cracks, and by the time symptoms appear, the cancer may already be in an advanced stage.
In collaboration with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust, the North Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group takes a hands-on approach in arranging important Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing events for men over 40 throughout the communities of North Wales. This simple blood test, taken by a registered phlebotomist, can help spot early signs of Prostate Cancer, with results ready in 48 hours. Each test currently costs £26, but thanks to generous donations, the group can reduce the price to just £10.
The North Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group serves the entire region and meets quarterly at the new Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Bodelwyddan, as well as in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, and Tywyn, Meirionydd. They offer support to men who have recently been diagnosed, have completed treatment, or simply need someone to talk to about their prostate cancer journey.
The meetings are regularly attended by Cancer Specialist Nurses, and men can choose to bring along family members to talk with or listen to others who have experienced various prostate cancer treatments.
