Story
We are seeking funding of £5,000 to support a project celebrating the centennial of the Deaflympics in Great Britain through an engaging exhibition, seminars, and workshops focused on women and grassroots participation in deaf sports.
About DSPY
The Deaf Sports Personality of the Year (DSPY) event serves as a cultural gathering for British Sign Language users, promoting collaboration between Deaf and hearing communities. Since 2010, this bi-annual event has provided a platform for networking, information exchange, and recognition of the achievements of Deaf athletes, highlighting their resilience and contributions.
Objectives
Our key objectives include:
Fostering community awareness about the Deaf community and its culture.
Empowering younger Deaf athletes by boosting their confidence and encouraging their involvement in sports and healthier lifestyles.
Building stronger community bonds and support networks among participants.
Event Details
The DSPY features stalls, seminars, and workshops that allow individuals to engage with topics relevant to the Deaf community. The event culminates in an awards ceremony celebrating not only athletic success but also the determination and effort of Deaf athletes who have overcome unique challenges.
Community Impact
With 97% of deaf children educated in mainstream settings, many lack a sense of belonging and connection. This isolation can lead to marginalisation and poorer health outcomes. The DSPY aims to combat these issues by promoting engagement with local deaf clubs, schools, and charities while recognising past winners as role models. This fosters a sense of community and encourages younger deaf individuals to strive for achievement in sports.
