Story

Dorset Ethnic Minority Association is a pioneering charitable organisation in the honouring, celebration and showcasing positive contributions to the Dorset Community by the Ethnic Minorities within Dorset.

We aim to showcase and celebrate success in Dorset's community by BAME individuals or businesses. This will be achieved by an online nomination and voting campaign culminating at the DEMA awards ceremony and cultural night. This event will be a celebration of success and cultural diversity in Dorset UK.

Our aim is create a platform where ethnic minority success stories which benefit the community are shared and celebrated. By creating a platform like this we create a media or data source for our community to see that ethnic minorities are not just here to take and pilfer resources but to contribute to our community.

Our goal is enhance social inclusion of ethnic minoriities into the community and build trust in the BME community as the media has inadvertently generated apprehension and built mental stereotypes of what ethnic minorities are trying to achieve in society. We want to breakdown these stereotypes by offering alternative news which shows the fantastic works done by BME individuals and business in the community. we hope that when the community sees our capabilities in business, sports, academia and industry they will be more accepting of diversity and equality and this will ultimately allow for ethnic minorities to break the glass ceiling when trying to get promotions or elections in to seat of authority. we want to create a society where no one is polarised or marginalised based on ethnicity but one where we have equal opportunities ot dented by negative press or stereotypes.

DEMA wants to create a legacy where ethnic minorities can thrive to succeed so as to be recognised and thereby generating an environment where even future generations can explore their full potential in business or leisure and not be pre-disposed to fail because it is assumed that they have a foreign sounding name and therefore are not trusted to hold positions of authority or leadership.
