The Mayor's Chosen Charities all help those within the local community and the surrounding areas. Throughout the Mayoral year we will be fundraising to help support them to continue their good work. Each charity helps the community in different ways.
Bath Cancer Support Unit - BCUSG raises money to support cancer treatment at the RUH in Bath and is run solely by volunteers. Since it was formed in 1985 over £4.5 million has been raised and spent on providing a range of facilities including state-of-the art-equipment, a new reception area and a day treatment ward, new toilets for patients plus a quiet room where diagnosis can be discussed with patients. Routine expenses have covered newspapers, refreshments, information packages, headscarves and wigs.
Friends of the Down Cemetery - We assist Wiltshire Council in helping keep the graves at the Down clear of overgrowth. We are in the process of collating all grave inscriptions and burial records and making them available to the public. We are also looking at ways to restore damaged graves and mausoleums. As part of our work we are looking at ways to improve the area as a wildlife haven and documented species found there.
Friends of Biss Meadows - Formed in early 2009 with the aim to protect, conserve and enhance the natural environment of the Country Park and its water course through promoting its activities and encouraging others to join us in this work. The initial group could see the opportunities of the Park by providing a well-maintained and welcoming natural space as well as engaging with partners independently to develop the park through the group’s own aspirations offering nature-related activities as well as large open spaces for general public use.
Trowbridge Community Area Future (TCAF) is an independent charity supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community. TCAF runs a growing number of weekly youth cafes in which we provide non-formal education and life-long learning skills (drugs/alcohol/sex). During school holidays, TCAF continues to provide youth drop-ins, with activities including abseiling, canoeing, arts and crafts. TCAF operates three drop-in youth cafes, an outreach session in central Trowbridge for young people and a one-to-one referral service at John of Gaunt school; on average 60 young people use one or more of our facilities/services every week, with a reach of over 250 young people. TCAF are also the host charity for the Community Hub at BA14 in The Shires. This offers residents of Trowbridge and Wiltshire to access information of local services available such as Victim Support, Wiltshire Sight, Trowbridge Lions and many more.
