Story

We have known Dennis for over 35 years. Over the years he has been a dependable friend, a loving father, and a supportive confidante to those who have known him.

Pre-illness:

Dennis' family suffered two losses very close together, Dennis lost his wife and his mother-in-law. He suddenly became a single father to three wonderful children, and was the sole family member to keep them together. With no one else for the family, he had to keep going and be strong for the kids: raising them alone.

This state of affairs left him very vulnerable to illness, and a low immune system, leading to a near death experience: a virus known as Gillian Bare Syndrome. Dennis was left paralysed from the head down.

The subsequent events, and lack of support from the NHS, led to:

-Prolonged misdiagnosis

-Irregular medical check ups

-Inadequate or no physiotherapy

At times, he seemed to be wholly lost in the NHS system.

All of this lack of in

tervention has halted (slowed down) effective recovery. He has often felt overwhelmed and intimated by the what is ahead, but he has kept his faith strong.

This fundraiser hopes to provide Dennis with consistent and regular physiotherapy, and help him regain control of his body. We have already seen

what some therapy has achieved: Dennis can now eat independently! Imagine what could be achieved if he was given the support he so truly deserves.

About Guillian Barre Syndrome

A rare disorder where the immune system affects the brain and spinal cord ,which eventually leads to paralysis. It can be caused by a respiratory infection or having the stomach flu.

There are several treatments used to help ease the symptoms, however there is no known cure for GBS. The majority of people suffering from GBS revcover within a year, however some people recover within months or years later.

Physiotherapy can assist in the recovery from GBS for example;

-helping patient with the ability to perform independent tasks

-patients must exercise

-educate patients on GBS

- Improve patient’s posture.

There are few people who survived GBS for example

At the age of 18 Kim Earnshaw woke up one morning and had no feeling in her fingers , the following day her feet went numb, the doctor diagnosed her with a protein defiency and she was sent home. The following night at work as she was closing up,within 20 minutes she could no longer lift boxes or read the spreadsheet .As she was scared, Kim tried to get to the front of the store but she kept falling on her way there it was that even Kim Earnshaw was diagnosed with GBS. Within 10 days she was completely paralyzed. Her paraylisis lasted for almost 2 months. This shows that recovery is so different for the individual.
