In August 2020 Derek had a scheduled quadruple heart bi-pass surgery at Broadgreen Hospital. The operation was a success and the Clegg family were looking forward to the future after a very physically demanding surgery.

Unfortunately whilst in the very early stages of recovery Derek suffered a serious stroke, leaving him with life changing injuries. He was rushed to Walton hospital where he had surgery to remove the clot from the left side of his brain. Derek was very poorly and the family where called in to say their goodbyes. Thankfully Derek pulled through, he is a fighter and we never gave up hope. The stroke has severely affected Derek's right side of his body. His speech, sight and swallowing have also been affected.

He was then moved to Arrow Park Hospital to their stroke ward where he received further treatment. However the Doctors and Physios have decided because Derek isn't "reaching their goals" they have discontinued his Rehabilitation treatment.

Due to COVID-19 being in full swing Derek's family have been unable to see him since the stroke happened almost 4 months ago. It has been a heart breaking time but things are slowly starting to take a turn for the better.

Derek has been moved to a nursing home which gives him all the care he will need, while progress had been slow in the hospital, now he is out his family have noticed a real difference. He is overcoming obstacles his family were told he could not, and this week on the phone his family for the first time since his stroke have heard him speak. He has only managed a couple words however this is a massive accomplishment. The next goal will be to get Derek home.

For his family it has been an emotional rollercoaster, and they have been asked by friends and ex colleagues to set up this just giving page to allow people to donate if they wish. The donations will go towards a specialist wheelchair and private neuro physio recovery sessions which are so desperately needed.

For anyone wishing to donate the Clegg family can't thank you enough. Every penny will help Derek in his long journey that everyday he is fighting to overcome.
