    Story

    19/10/18

This is nobody’s dog, but somebody cares. We care.

    We urgently need your help.

This dog was found on the streets of Bosnia today and our rescuers could not leave this poor soul to suffer. They travelled 24 miles to give aid.

The pictures I am posting don’t show the horrific injuries, but believe me, they are very bad. I have no apologies; I am desperate for your help.

The wounds are much worse than at first thought. They are very badly infected. Antibiotics given and blood tests taken. This dog is not ready for surgery today. The vet thinks she has been used by men and their dogs for training.

We have just been asked to help get this injured dog to a vet, but the bill has to be raised else we cannot help and the damage is sickening.

With your help we can enable the vet to do what is needed.

Anything you can contribute is welcome, nothing is too small.

Please, please help us if you can.

    Update 20/10/18

We have named the dog DEVANTE (meaning "warrior").

He has had his wounds cleaned and dressed today at the vets.

He is receiving morphine for his pain.

He will have another operation later this week.

We still need your help to pay for all the vet fees and treatment.

    Update 22/10/18

Devante walked a few steps today.

Antibiotics are making progress, and also his wound drainage is going well.

    He looks happier today.

    Update 23/10/18

Devante is making very good progress. He had another small operation today to prepare him for a big operation in a few days time.

He has the best treatment and food and he looks a lot stronger and much more alert and full of hope.

What a difference from the poor hopeless soul found on the streets on Friday, just 4 days ago, when he was just hours from death because of the terrible wounds and infection attacking his body.

    Update 25/10/18

MAKE OR BREAK TIME FOR DEVANTE

Devante will have major reconstruction surgery on Saturday. It is a very difficult reconstruction to make as below the skin there is no muscle; it is all bone. The wounds are very deep and touch the internal organs. There is bone infection in the pelvic area. The vet is going to remove the tissue surrounding organs. If she doesn’t do this, the bacteria will infect them and cause organ failure. She will try to reconstruct the area and cover the pelvis, which is clearly visible.

The wounds are still open as there were two earlier smaller surgical procedures to clean the wounds and infection before this major surgery could take place.

They have got Devante this far. The infection has to be brought under control before it is too late. If it is left too long the infection will destroy his organs. The risks are that he is so thin, there is not much she can do to cover his wounds - like skin grafting. There is no spare flesh to hold things together. There are no muscles to ‘knit’ a strong protective cover.

We are asking the vet to give Devante the best chance of survival - his response to the treatment so far is encouraging. She will do her very best for him.

The bill will be huge but it's Devante's only chance and we must give him that chance.

Please help, no matter how small.

Honor’s Shelter Sapica is situated in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a private shelter for dogs saved from the streets, from the dog catchers, from death and from Praca public shelter. In Honor’s Shelter Sapica there are dogs who were once left to die, maltreated by uncaring owners or people on the streets. Here dogs are cared about, and they are given a chance to recover and have veterinary treatment. The aim is to find permanent homes for them through responsible adoption.

Honor’s Shelter Sapica is run by rescuer Fata Duric. It relies solely on the sponsorship of individual dogs and donations from kind supporters.
