Story
I am raising money to allow me to take a career break for Community Engagement and Educational Outreach
Objective
To dedicate six months to delivering talks and conducting educational sessions at Gurdwaras (Sikh place of worship), schools, universities, workplaces, police headquarters, and other places of worship. The aim is to raise awareness about Sikh identity, challenge stereotypes, and promote understanding of Sikh values and their contribution to society.
Background
I have been engaged in this Seva (selfless service) alongside my regular work for several years. The demand for these talks has grown significantly, demonstrating their importance and impact. However, balancing this with work commitments has resulted in missed opportunities to engage with more groups and organisations.
Supporting Organisations
Edinburgh Interfaith Association: With over 30 years of experience in school programming and extensive contacts, they will assist with school outreach and booking arrangements.
Local Gurdwaras: They will help host educational visits and tours, providing practical insights into Sikh practices and culture.
Goals
Raise Awareness: Educate the public about Sikh identity and the positive role Sikhs play in Scotland today.
Challenge Stereotypes: Address misconceptions and promote appreciation for the contributions of Sikhs.
Encourage Understanding: Highlight how Sikh values guide Sikhs in their daily lives and responses to contemporary moral issues.
Educational Workshops: Conduct workshops for both adults and children to teach them about Sikh history and principles, progressing towards a better understanding of becoming an Amritdari.
Key Themes
Sikh Identity and Contributions: Discuss the Sikh community's role in Scotland, motivated by their faith to perform selfless acts for the benefit of others.
Contemporary Moral Issues: Address issues such as discrimination, bullying, harassment, homosexuality, and anti-terrorism from a Sikh perspective.
Workshops at Gurdwaras: Offer sessions for both Sikhs and non-Sikhs to learn about Sikh faith and its practices.
Timeline
Month 1: Initiate school outreach programs with the help of Edinburgh Interfaith Association. Start scheduling talks and visits.
Month 2-3: Conduct talks and educational sessions at schools, universities, workplaces, police headquarters, and other places of worship.
Month 4-5: Focus on hosting educational visits to Gurdwaras and delivering workshops.
Month 6: Evaluate the impact of the project, gather feedback, and plan for future engagements.
Benefits
For the Community: Increased awareness and understanding of Sikhi, reduced stereotypes, and enhanced community cohesion.
For the Organisation: Positive public relations, demonstrating support for cultural and religious diversity.
For Myself: Personal fulfilment from contributing to the community and promoting understanding.
Request
I am planning to take a six months career break to focus on this important initiative, and the money raised will cover my time, provide resources and cover travel expenses for within Scotland and further if the demands are there.
Conclusion
This project has the potential to make a significant positive impact on our community by fostering understanding and appreciation of Sikhi. With the support of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association and local Gurdwaras, I am confident that this initiative will succeed and benefit many.
Thank you
