Story

For 25 years The Rotary Club of Colombo has organised and hosted the Sunshine Games, a celebration of sportmanship and perseverance for the differently abled child.

This annual sports carnival is a day of fun and celebration for over 800 differently abled children and each year’s event promises to be bigger and filled with more activities. Speaking about the Sunshine Games Immediate Past President Dinali Bandaranayake Dandeniya, The Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan (RCCM), said, “it is both a privilege and a honour to be able to host The Sunshine Games. It’s a day dedicated to differently abled children from all over the island, it is their day to shine, to smile, to laugh and most importantly to be recognised. These children are so enthusiastic and positive in their approach and clearly enjoy displaying their sporting capabilities in front of dozens of friends and family. This is one of our long-standing flagship projects promoting an all-ability sporting event. So kids in wheelchairs, kids with special needs, kids with learning disabilities, all abilities come together and do what they like to do, which is sports."

The track meet brings together special needs children from across the Island to showcase their talents. The games are an extremely exciting and emotional day with much excitement and fun for everyone that attends. Close to 800 special needs students from 21 schools will be taking part in this year’s event.

The goal of the Sunshine Games is to give special needs students the same athletic opportunities as their peers. Dinali would like to take this opportunity on behalf of our members to thank all our generous supporters and sponsors, for allowing us to carry out a calendar of charity work with their kind contributions.”

The Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan is proud of its involvement in helping to build a better community by way of improving the lives and environments of our children.
