    Story

    Dom Belletty Off-Road Marathon Challenges

I’m setting myself a challenge for 2017, to complete The Yorkshireman and The Spires and Steeples Challenge, both are 26.2 mile cross country marathons to raise £1000 for The All Night Café.

After nearly eradicating homelessness in the UK, the numbers are back on the rise again. Since 2010, the number of people sleeping rough has risen year on year, but one statistic, which stands out, is the fact that 1 in 10 are homeless Veterans. No other occupation accounts for such a high percentage of homelessness throughout the UK.

That’s why I chose to support The All Night Café, which recognises the issue of homeless Veterans. A not for profit organisation, they rely on the good will of local residents and companies to provide free home cooked meals and refreshments throughout the night; an opportunity for a hot shower; clean clothes; a warm, safe and welcoming place for the homeless. I think everyone deserves a helping hand and our proud service men and women are no different.

My goal of £1,000 will ensure the All night Café can operate for one full month and continue to provide support, food, heat and shelter for its homeless customers.

Part 1 Just came across a news article on the BBC which grabbed my attention, regarding the link between the rise of homelessness and the welfare reforms. Not surprising you might say, although the source of the data is from the National Audit Office. Who took great care in explaining how much the “light touch approach” of the government in tackling the issue of homelessness is costing the tax payer.

Part 2 So, here’s the rub, there has been a 60% rise in the number of households living in temporary accommodation following a 4-year freeze on housing benefits, whilst at the same time private rents have continued to rise and construction of new social housing has simply stagnated. Meaning the tax payer has had to foot the bill of 1.1 billion pounds per year on providing temporary housing.

Part 3 Which in turn has allowed councils to fill the gap left by the private sector, who have in the past provided councils around the country with much needed accommodation in the absence of sufficient social housing. Begging the question, does simply freezing payments coupled with under investment in affordable housing really add up to long term savings and better outcomes for the most vulnerable in society?
