Story

Dander for Dylan

In the summer, young Dylan Hume from our 2015 Sharks was diagnosed with a rare blood condition known as aplastic anaemia. It is a condition similar in nature to leukaemia and means the body isn’t producing enough blood cells.

Dylan is 9 years old and since August, he has had 30 transfusions and counting, 5 operations and is currently on 10 different daily medications. The plan for Dylan going forward is to have a bone marrow transplant which will most likely mean a trip to Glasgow for him for several months.

As you can imagine, this is all having a massive impact on Dylan and his dad Ross, who is also a coach of the Sharks team, mum Claire and sister Nicole. We want to try and do something to help and are planning a sponsored walk from Hazelbank Park to Loughshore on Sunday 10 November at 10am.

We’d like as many people from the club, across all our teams, and their friends and family to get involved so please put that date in your diary.

We can only imagine what it would be like if this was one of our own kids so lets get the whole club to rally around one of our own player & coach and offer as much support as we can. Alone we can do little, together we can do so much.

Dylan needs a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, chemo and regular blood transfusions. This means he will need a series of donors. To help support Dylan and others in a similar position, we are also asking that all eligible people within or associated to the club do their bit by signing up to the bone marrow register.

You can do this via DKMS here: https://www.dkms.org.uk/register-now

Or 16 – 30 year olds can do it via the Anthony Nolan trust here: https://tinyurl.com/m9tpux97

You can also register as a blood donor here: https://nibts.hscni.net/register-as-a-donor/

If you need more details, please contact Johnny O’Kane of the 2015’s on 07706 846440 or Paul Doran of the 2014’s on 07824 397230.
