Story
In recent years most of my South Sudanese friends have been living in or near the town of Yei. Until last summer it was relatively peaceful. But now the town has become a focus of conflict and I hear disturbing stories of abduction, torture, murder and rape. One church leader was apparently burnt alive. "Even young boys can be killed and young girls raped,” said one friend, “and old ones too." Many Mündüs are now refugees in Uganda - for the second or even third time their lives. Uganda treats the refugees generously - but the numbers are overwhelming. In the second half of last year over 300,000 refugees fled from the Yei area to Uganda – greater than the number who fled from Syria during the whole of 2016. More than 2500 refugees continue to pour into Uganda every day. Bidibidi, just a village last year, now hosts the largest refugee settlement in the world. You can imagine that the refugees have been traumatised by their experiences. My friend Ngaimoko, son of one of the original team that translated the Mündü New Testament, is working with the Diocese of Yei (Episcopal Church of South Sudan) to provide trauma healing and encouragement for Mündü refugees in their own language. I plan to do the Belfast City Marathon Walk (eight miles) on 1st May in order to raise some money for Ngaimoko and his work.

8 years agoSome good news from Yei! A peace agreement has been signed between Government of South Sudan officials in the Yei area and the rebel SPLA-IO forces who have been operating in the area. Pray this will lead to a lasting peace so that refugees can return home and people can grow food again. Meanwhile they still need a trauma healing program...

8 years agoThe Jesus Film has been downloaded in 4 languages spoken by the refugees - Mundu Kakwa, Bari and Juba Arabic. They now need equipment to show it in the camps. "We felt it is good to listen to words of Jesus Christ in local languages." The Anglican Bishop of Yei has been visiting the camps over Easter.
