Story

Dr Aung Kyi, beloved father and devoted husband, was rushed into New Cross Hospital on the morning of 3rd January 2020. He died of a heart attack at the age of 73.

Dr Aung Kyi incarnated a sense of duty his entire life. A family man who took care of his loved ones above all else (unless he was on a golf course), Dr Aung Kyi worked for the National Health Service for 36 years. He believed in public service and in the most meticulous care for his patients. He was active as a general practitioner and took part in many NHS primary care committees. He fought constantly for what he believed to be the best for patients. Dr Aung Kyi was known for his strong opinions, which he never hesitated to share and defend, even if that meant opposing a Member of Parliament in the media! Wherever he went, Dr Aung Kyi left no one indifferent. He adored arguing, but never in place of caring. Involved in charity work, he loved Burma as much as the United Kingdom, his country of adoption. Recently, he sponsored the education of two Burmese students and the construction of a village well. The extent of his generosity was endless. His family, his friends, his patients, and everyone who benefited from the kindness in his core, will deeply miss him (and his unforgettable laugh).

As the down-to-earth person he always was, Dr Aung Kyi would have preferred if donations replaced cards and flowers. If you intended to send these, we would rather receive your donations for the following purpose. We plan to purchase a defibrillator (or more) in his name to the North Okkalapa Hospital in Yangon, where his career started. Our father already donated equipment to that hospital in the name of our mother, who died in 2012. Your gifts will perpetuate what Daddy gave his life to: the health and well-being of others.

Please know that you are not obliged to donate, we welcome all thoughts, condolences and stories of our father on this page.

Much care,

Thuzar & Sandar Kyi
