    Story

Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) says that a voice was once heard commanding a cloud to irrigate a man’s garden. When the man was asked what he did with the garden, he replied that he estimated the produce of his garden. Then he distributed one-third to charity, kept one-third for himself and his family, and invested one-third back into the garden.

Just as Allah (swt) sent a cloud for this man who gave to the poor, Allah will also provide for us in miraculous ways if we give what we love for the pleasure of Allah and in the service of mankind. As the hadith beautifully illustrates, Allah replaces what we give and multiplies it.

The notion of giving, especially giving and helping those in need, is so entrenched in Islam.

“Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.”

    (The Holy Qur’an, 2:245)

If you really need treatment and can’t afford it what choice do you have?

Two years ago, many people stepped forward and helped Sabrina survive her Eating Disorder. Your generous donation helped Sabrina to go to Doctor, see a Psychiatrist, and get dental treatment from a Dentist and it also helped paid for her food and medicine. Since June 2021, Sabrina has been working with an ED Recovery Coach Safia Muzaffar and despite all the limitations she has made vast improvement. Her conviction and fight for her life shows how strong a human spirit can be.

The pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns were hard on all of us, in different ways. Isolation, joblessness, childcare, and many other challenges severely affected the mental well-being of many people around the world. The stress we’ve all faced during the pandemic has played out in a wide variety of ways, and for those with eating disorders—an exacerbation of symptoms. The stress of the pandemic has been tough on those with eating disorders. Sabrina has also been impacted and has suffered. Any hope of her getting treatment outside Algeria seems very hard now. Sabrina was diagnosed with arthritis last month and she has run out of money to pay for her medical bills, medicine and food.

We humbly ask you to give as little as you can to help Sabrina live. Sabrina has decided to stay in Algeria and fight for her life. She has struggled in isolation for over 30 years now. Your help will make a huge difference.

    Sabrina Life Story

    Background

Born in Algeria, Sabrina grew up in an emotionally abusive environment. As a child she was taunted over her weight and faced neglect from her immediate family.

She grew up with low confidence, overwhelming feelings of distress, fear and helplessness.

Sabrina believed that losing weight would raise her feelings of self-worth, she’ll be accepted by her family. There’s a lot of changes that come with losing a drastic amount of weight. They’re just as much emotional as they are physical and they affect every aspect of your life. From daily interactions, relationships to hard realizations. The journey of weight loss turned into Anorexia.

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are a serious form of mental illness. Anorexia nervosa is where sufferers refuse or restrict food and have a distorted image of their bodies. Bulimia involves binge-eating and vomiting.

Sabrina’s health began to deteriorate and she had to be admitted to hospital and was institutionalised number of times which put a huge strain on the family .

Lack of awareness and treatment led to Sabrina being stuck in cycle of Eating Disorder for years.

It took several years for Sabrina learned to how to love and accept herself, and she acknowledges the barriers our culture has, barriers which damage and shame women.

Society gives us the message that we are not okay as we are, they make us believe that if we look certain way, we will be successful. It’s hard to recognize these messages because it’s the cultural water we swim in, which makes us believe it’s the truth.

Sabrina has made vast improvements in last two years. She was lucky to receive free support from Eating Disorder Recovery Coach Safia Muzaffar. Sabrina challenged her illness and despite all the problems and limitations has decided to get well. It was very sad when last month Sabrina experienced a crippling pain and couldn't walk. Sadly she was diagnosed with arthritis. Sabrina needs our support to pay for her food and medical bills.

The Doctor gave her the following medicine

Please help Sabrina to live. Health matters and Sabrina's wellbeing matters to so many of us. The illness is not her fault and full recovery from Eating Disorder is her right.
