Story
Hi there, my name is Jodie and I'm fundraising for my friend's daughter to get an education that SHOULD be available to all children for free. People in South Africa cannot use fundraising sites, hence I am doing this for her. My friend, C, is a 28 year old single mother who works all the hours god sends in a supermarket to provide for her daughter and her mother, a pensioner who cannot work due to ill health. C has had some very serious health problems recently and had to have major surgery, which has eaten up all their savings.
In the UK, all children have a right to an education. In South Africa this isn't the case. If you work (even if you are on a low salary like C) it is unlikely you will get funding. K does not qualify. There are no benefits in South Africa like there is in the UK, so the family live hand to mouth.
K is very kind and considerate of others. She's extremely bright and her favourite thing to do is Homework.
Every child should have the right to an education... But K's annual fee comes to R55,920 (around £3000). This is more than C earns in a year. It includes the tuition, stationery, uniforms, equipment, meals, transport and excursions.
I have known C since 2011 when I spent some time in South Africa. She is a wonderful, hard working woman who has had far more to cope with from life for someone of her age. Fleeing from an abusive relationship whilst pregnant for her and K's safety cost her everything. Her former partner does not provide in any way and there is no CPS in South Africa. C has done everything she can for K, but due to the treatment and surgery she needed, any savings for the school fees is now gone.
Thank you for reading.
(FYI I have anonymised the names for safety so her abuser cannot easily find this. Therefore I have referred only by initials. C has provided the photos to post. I will post a photo of last year's Moneygram receipt in the updates so you can see this is all genuine).
