Story

Following the successes of crowd funding to replace trees in Longmead Avenue (see Bishopston Voice), Maple Road and Berkeley Road, the community in Egerton Road is stepping up to the challenge of raising £590 to replace 2 diseased street trees situated near nos 24/26 (Ref 100013.5) and no 33 Egerton Road (Ref 100017.5).

The council no longer replace diseased trees free of charge and are therefore we are asking sponsorhip from the community of £295 each to replace the two trees with ornamental pear trees:-

Planting and watering service: supply, plant, stake and cage the tree and water it for 2 years to ensure it establishes at £295 for each tree. Optional extra: for £25 the council will fit a commemorative plaque."

The replacement trees will be Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer' aka Ornamental Pear. About ten examples of these can be seen in various locations along the street. Eventually there will be an avenue of pears, although this may take many years. The ornamental pears are smaller and offer blossom and fruit for the birds. Their smaller size means they won't need pruning/hacking back as often as the remaining limes. Trees also help control particulate pollution.

For information and background, including a map of these and other trees available for sponsorship (or adoption) across the city, here is a link to Bristol City Council's Tree sponsorship page.

There has already been a constructive and supportive discussion on the Egerton Road community Facebook page prior to this sponsorship drive. Thank you for your support!

Here are some examples of existing ornamental pears in the road:-

Please contact me at number 26 if you would rather donate by cash or cheque.

If we raise more than the target amount, perhaps we could use extra funds to sponsor a tree in a poorer neighbourhood, or adopt a tree from the council's scheme.
