    Story

My little brother Keir, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, this is a degenerative muscle wasting condition that affects every muscle in their bodies including his heart.....just recently I have watched Keir closely, he can no longer get up and down our stairs , he needs help standing up from the sitting position, he can no longer manage to get in and out of the bath without assistance and a bath chair.....every day things seem to get more difficult for him ..from getting up to getting himself dressed. ...his occupational therapists have suggested and put plans forward for a downstairs bedroom and bathroom for Keir, which in the long term and on paper sounds great....but let's look at the safety side of things, Keir has regular falls, what if there is a fire...what if he needs assistance and calls out for help....he's downstairs alone...possible hurt or frightened....WHY SHOULD HE BE SEGREGATED FROM HIS FAMILY?? I would like to help raise funds for him to help build a two story extension which would accommodate his needs as well as staying part of our loving family and not being made to feel isolated. My idea would be to have a bedroom solely for Keir next to mums room, with a wet room within his room for easy accessibility...downstairs extension would HOUSE a through floor lift which enables him to use his electric wheelchair to manoeuvre throughout the house and a therapy /rest room/downstairs toilet. In the ideal world this would be perfect, but in the councils eyes his feelings and my family's feelings don't matter...but they matter too me....this is why I'm asking any one out there if they would donate to Keir's page to help us get things moving for him to have a better quality of life and to be allowed to stay at home as part of the family and not segregated like he doesn't matter.....if you are kind enough to donate to his cause, no matter how small, we will be extremely thankful to each and every one of you. Thank you for taking time to read this.

Good luck Elaine. No-one should go through what your brother and your family is experiencing, I'm so sorry. I hope you are able to realise your sensible plan for him.
