Story
My fundraising challenge! I have chosen to walk up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) twice in one day at the end of May. The average time to climb up and down is between 5 and 7 hours. That means that we will be starting our first climb at 4.30am and hope to finish the two climbs by 8.00pm that evening!
What am I fundraising for? For my place to go to the World Scout Jamboree 2023, the air ambulance for our area and a cancer charity which helps young people.
I have been chosen to represent Devon at the 2023 World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) this summer. This is a World Organisation of the Scout Movement event, which happens every four years, each time hosted by a different country. This year it is the 25th WSJ event and 40,000 Scouts from across the world will be coming together in South Korea.
There will be many activities happening during the three week event, but the focus is about a sustainable world, building an understanding of global issues and to develop ideas on what we can do to make the dream of a sustainable world a reality. I can’t wait to meet people from all over the world, from diverse cultures and backgrounds, to learn from them and to bring back my new knowledge to share in building a better future for this world.
The event is about Think big. Dream wild. Act together.
The selection weekend took place at a very wet muddy campsite in October 2021. We participated in lots of activities with other Scouts from all over Devon. 72 scouts were selected to represent Devon. Each of us is having to raise £4,300 which is a lot of money for a person my age. A portion of this money also contributes to the cost of Scouts attending the WSJ from less wealthy countries in order to facilitate them being able to join us. Together with other selected scouts we have run a chocolate bingo night, a beetle drive, cake sales, activity stalls at village events, plus babysitting and looking after other people’s animals, as well as helping campers with their equipment at the local festival called Chagstock. We have a quiz event in April and the Snowdon challenge will be my final fundraising event.
Please have a look at the Scouts website if you want to find out more about the WSJ 2023 event.
I am also raising money for two other charities that I am passionate about with half the funds raised being split between them.
The reason I have chosen to support the air ambulance for Devon is because I live on Dartmoor in Devon where the charity’s services are instrumental in saving people’s lives and its funding is only through charitable donations.
The other charity I am supporting helps children and young people with cancer find the strength to face everything cancer throws at them. Cancer affects so many people and my Nana is currently undergoing cancer treatment. It’s so hard to think of anybody going through such trauma particular someone my age and this charity provides such an invaluable service to young people.
I really appreciate your time in reading my story and any donations are gratefully received. I will let you know how I get on.
Thank you
Eleanor XX
